Designed by Pierre Balmain (France), but manufactured in the US by Briny Marlin. By the way, there is a tag inside the jacket and another one in the skirt certifying that the garment was made in the Union.

This nice uniform from Valentino of Rome is only one of the many variants which existed. Indeed, he introduced the "mix-and-match" uniform made of washable polyester garments. The uniform existed also in dark purple (plum) and beige (tan) colours. The scarf also existed in two colours. I was fortunate enough to get the matching scarf as the brown/chocolate one is hard to find.

All gold buttons have the "V" logo from Valentino (which is quite unusual for an airline) and the scarf writes the full name in large letters.

A quite different design was brought in 1974 by Stan Herman of New York (made by Fashionaire, Division of Hart, Schaffner & Marx). This "royal blue" skirt suit was worn with a "safari" jacket with striped blouse or sweater. Trousers could be worn instead of the skirt. It was also issued in sand and poppy colour. According to the Kansas City Museum this date corresponds to the time their title changed from "hostesses" to "flight attendants" and male attendants came back on board.

This museum has also carefully described several TWA uniforms >> More info. Worth a visit.

In August 2011 a second blue uniform was added so that I can now display it in trousers and in skirt version.

In August 2011 a second blue uniform was added so that I can now display it in trousers and in skirt version.

This uniform was designed by Ralph Lauren and didn't change significantly until the demise of TWA in April 2001.
There was a 6- and a 4-button jacket. This suit was also issued in aviator blue colour.
TWA was the first airline to reintroduce the military style uniform that is so common today. When they brought out this uniform in 77/78 airlines where still wearing the groovy uniforms of the seventies. It was actually quite shocking to see crews wearing such a taylored and conservative uniform during that time.
Around 1996-97 the uniform was updated by Rodes.
The red-brown scarf shown on the dress belongs also to the last issue. This one was issued while the crews asked for a fresher look after wearing the same uniform for many years. A neck tie in the same fabric is shown on the last picture.

Visit also the TWA Silver wings site where several uniforms are shown.

All my thanks to Anita Ridpath for reviewing this page and for her advice.

1996-2001 Later issues by Rodes

Around 1996-97 the uniform was updated by Rodes. The burgundy strips on the sleeves were replaced with navy strips and a gold TWA logo was placed on the right sleeve. The double breasted jackets were replaced with a more simple design. Gold buttons replaced the charcoal ones and the silver wing was replace with a new redesigned golden globe. Flat front trousers were issued along with pleated ones and the dress was also redesigned.
The red-brown scarf shown on the dress belongs also to the last issue. This one was issued while the crews asked for a fresher look after wearing the same uniform for many years. A neck tie in the same fabric is shown on the last picture. Not sure whether the dress belongs to the former or the latter uniform.
